EFT – What
Is It?
How many times have you tried to stop smoking?
Attempted to cut down on overeating? Or avoided something because
of fear, anxiety, or worries?
The negative emotions created in our bodies when
we attempt to make a change or address an underlying
issue can literally be life-limiting. You might think that
if you could just have plastic surgery / buy that outfit / get
your teeth fixed / lose that weight, you would feel better about
yourself. Unfortunately, if you don’t deal with your self-esteem
and your limiting beliefs, you end up trying to “fix”
your flaws, usually with limited success, and the cycle begins
once again.
Emotional Freedom Technique
(EFT) was developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, who adapted Roger
Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy (TFT) to create a unique
way of communicating with our body’s energy system. It is
an effective and simple process that uses tapping on acupressure
points on the head, upper body and hands (see the diagram) to
balance the energy in the body. It works on the premise that
"The cause of all negative emotions
is a disruption in the body's energy system."
How Does It Work?
Just imagine for a moment how you feel when you
have a negative emotion, such as fear, anger, resentment, or any
number of examples. It is likely that you will experience a physical
sensation in your body; perhaps you envisage something in your
mind; or you tell yourself that something bad is about to happen
or has happened.
An EFT practitioner will ask you to “tune
in” to this feeling, whether remembered or anticipated,
and really immerse yourself in all that is going on in your mind
and in your body. As you do this, you experience the same
feelings as if the event were actually happening. This
is the energy in your body responding to the perceived emotion.
Remember, the underlying principle of EFT is
the following statement:
"The cause of all negative emotions
is a disruption in the body's energy system."

EFT works by applying slight pressure
(tapping using the fingertips) on energy meridian points located
on the head, upper body and hands (see diagram). EFT has often
been compared with acupuncture (which indeed also treats the meridian
system), but let me stress: no needles are used in EFT.
As you tune in to your feelings, and perhaps
describe the event or situation that is causing this emotion,
you will tap gently on these points. This tapping unblocks the
meridians, allowing your energy to flow unhindered. Consequently,
the attached memory, phobia, pain, or anxiety reduces in intensity.
In some cases, this happens extremely quickly, and you might wonder
why you had the negative emotion in the first place.
If the issue is not resolved after a few
rounds of tapping, it is highly probable that other deeper aspects
of the issue will need to be resolved. An experienced practitioner
will guide you through this process, and you will notice shifts
in energy (and subsequent feelings and behaviours) as the issues
are uncovered. |
| Using EFT in Belief
Work
The beauty of EFT is that it can be used on everything!
As well as using EFT to treat symptoms and underlying negative
emotions resulting from trauma, pain or phobias, it can also be
used in an empowering way to uncover limiting beliefs and replace
them with resourceful ones.
It is a fact that how we see ourselves has a
direct impact on how we live our lives and how we attract success
and abundance. Indeed, it is not whether your beliefs are true
or false that matters, it is the fact that you believe them that
makes them appear to be true. And further:
You will always create your reality in order
to prove to yourself that the beliefs you hold are true.
There may be many complex reasons why you have
the beliefs you do. EFT can be used to unravel and eliminate these
limiting beliefs and replace them with resourceful ones.
Imagine what you could achieve if nothing seemed
impossible!
What Happens During an EFT Session?
Usually a session lasts one hour, though longer
sessions can be arranged. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire,
in order to establish your preferred outcome, and a program of
treatment will be agreed upon. Typically, clients attend between
two and five sessions.
We will start work on the issue straight away.
And, when the session is complete, you will be given support materials
to enable you to continue the healing process between sessions.
Included in the cost of the session is a follow-up phone call
that you can make at an arranged time between sessions.
You can change as you allow EFT to bring freedom
into your life where you thought none was possible.
