The human givens approach is a set of organising ideas that provides a holistic, scientific framework for understanding the way that individuals and society work. That framework has one central, highly empowering idea at its core - which human beings, like all organic beings, come into this world with a set of needs. If those needs are met appropriately, it is not possible to be mentally ill. I do not believe a more powerful statement than that could ever be made about the human condition. If human beings' needs are met, they won't get depressed; they cannot have psychosis; they cannot have manic depression; they cannot be in the grip of addictions. It is just not possible. Supervision for BACP Accreditation
To become an accredited counsellor, the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) requires counsellors to have 450 hours of supervised practice with a minimum of 1.5 hours supervision per month. BACP accredited supervisors can facilitate supervisees working towards accreditation.
People drink for many reasons, to be more sociable, to reduce stress, to cope with difficult feelings, or sometimes just out of habit. Some people are able to drink safely in moderation, while for others almost any alcohol can cause a problem.
Whatever your difficulty with alcohol, talking to a counsellor or psychotherapist with experience in the field can help. The following are some of the reasons people give for seeking help with their drinking:
I regularly drink a lot of alcohol every day, do I have a problem?
Causes of trauma
Accidents and other distressing events happen to all of us at some time in our lives. Sometimes we take these in our stride and live through them unscathed, but some events can leave a residue that continues to affect us years later. Some examples of the causes of trauma are given in the list below:
Clinical psychologists offer a range of therapies which can include counselling, psychodynamic psychotherapy and CBT.
Clinical psychologists are differentiated from other psychotherapists in that their work is regulated by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health Professions Council (HPC) which enables them to produce reports for legal proceedings and attend court as expert witnesses. Some health insurance companies will only pay for psychotherapy if it is carried out by a clinical psychologist.
Hypnotherapy uses an altered state of awareness, induced by a state of deep relaxation, for the treatment and relief of a wide variety of physical and psychological symptoms.
There are many different techniques which can be used to help you. Some conditions require relatively little intervention, whilst others require deeper exploration of memories and beliefs which could be adversely affecting your life.
You are always in charge of the hypnotic session, and can leave the hypnotic state at any time, just as easily as you entered it. It is important to note that no-one can be hypnotised against their will nor forced to do or say anything they do not want to do.
In relationship counselling both partners work with a counsellor to deal with problems that are affecting the relationship. These can include issues such as work, finances, children, family and emotional problems. Any type of relationship can benefit from relationship counselling, irrespective of marital status, age, sexual orientation or race. Sessions last an hour and normally take place once a week. There is no limit to the number of sessions - some couples only require a few weeks while others may stay for much longer. For futher information contact Maurice Tomkinson.
What is Psychosynthesis?
One of the core discoveries of modern psychology is that human beings are conditioned by their childhood experiences. Freud and others spoke of the unconscious, a part of our minds that is normally inaccessible but which produces real effects on feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
Roberto Assagioli, the founder of psychosynthesis, while working with the methods of psychoanalysis developed by Freud made the discovery that not all distress could be explained by the past. Many problems arise because of "existential" issues such as unfulfilled potential, lack of meaning, alientation, emptiness, loss of identity and the need for purpose. These symptoms carry a message, that needs to be listened to rather than tranquilised.
What is psychotherapy?
Whereas most people have an idea what counselling means, many are much less clear about psychotherapy. There is considerable overlap between counselling and psychotherapy, both in the issues that can be addressed and the methods used. In general psychotherapy tends to address more deep-seated problems which may have roots in very early childhood experiences. Psychotherapy tends to take longer, and a commitment to regular sessions becomes important. The training of a psychotherapist can be longer that that of a counsellor, and a psychotherapist will normally have been to therapy themselves for several years.
Young people experience feelings just as adults do, however (sometimes) express them differently. For many reasons it can be difficult for young people to express in words what they are experiencing emotionally and physically. A counsellor who can listen without judging can often help the teenager to work through their problems.
